---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: LAURA JONES <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sep 26, 2006 2:09 PM
Subject: African Music
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hello,

I work at a Juvenile Rehabilitation Center in Florida. We are having a
special event called Tour of the World where the boys I work with will each be
studying a continent and then presenting it to others. One of the things we
would like to do is get samples of music from each continent. Our budget is
very small, and we are not looking for full length CD's or albums, but samples
that could be played at each continents display. I wonder if you could
recommend a source to obtain some samples of African music?

Thank you in advance for your time.
 LAURA JONES

[ MODERATOR'S NOTE: Please do nt reply to the list, Please send all responses
directly to LAURA JONES <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - thank you ]

Dear Friends,

This will be my 4th year performing at Barbara Greenspan's house.
She has a lovely space with great sound and we've always had
a great time singing, sipping tea, and hanging out.

This year, Cameroonian producer/multi-instrumentalist Andre Manga
will accompany me. Andre produced my brand new 4th CD and is truly
a musical force of nature. This one ought to be interesting!

Barbara's house is located just over the hill in the valley (Van Nuys) and late
enough to be an easy commute, so no excuses, Westsiders!

Come along and join us!
Much love,
Ashley

West African Highlife Band. Launched by Kotoja’s Baba Ken Okulolo, the West
African Highlife Band was born from a request by the late director of
Ashkenaz,
David Nadel, for a band to concentrate on Ghanaian and West African
highlife dance music and rhythmic styles. With master musicians from several
West
African countries and the United States, the band draws on folk traditions
combined with modern stylistic elements, played with acoustic and electric

Prefacing Ms. Vaidyanathan is a performance at 4:00 pm by Kanti
Charugundla, also one of Shakti Dance Company's finest. On October
1, 6:00 pm, to celebrate Vijaydashmi of the Dassera festival, a
unique student choreographed group performance entitled Numbers and
Images will include guest performances by students of Guru Sudha
Chandrashekhar, of Hindu Temple Rhythms from Detroit, Michigan. This
program will also be prefaced by a Shakti soloist, Neela Moorthy ,
at 4:00 pm.
Nritya Naivedhyam features soloists Priyadarsini Govind and Rama
Vaidyanathan; they hail among the finest of Bharatha Natyam soloists
in all of India. Ms. Govind, trained under Guru Sri Rajaratnam
Pillai, has won some of the most prestigious of classical dance
awards, such as "Nritya Choodamani" from the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha
in Chennai, India. Critics praise her for exquisite grace in lasya,
impeccable precision in nritta (pure movement), and rare subtlety in
abhinaya (facial expression). Ms. Govind is now the pioneer in
introducing her popular DVDs on Understanding Bharata Natyam.,
explaining and performing the repertoire of Bharata Natyam as a
learning tool to students of dance. Ms. Vaidyanathan, trained by
Gurus Yamini Krishnamurthy and Saroja Vaidyanathan of New Delhi, has
also been celebrated in a number of dance reviews. Constantly
exploring new avenues in Bharatha Natyam, she is praised for her
creativity.
Senior Shakti Dance Company soloists Uma Kadekodi, Kanti
Charugundla, and Neela Moorthy have all learned Bharatha Natyam for
over twenty years, under Guru Viji Prakash. Each an educated
professional in her own right (a speech therapist, doctor, and
healthcare consultant, respectively), the three dancers find time
for Bharatha Natyam in their busy daily schedules. Ms. Kadekodi has
had a number of solo recitals in India and Los Angeles, but she has
won most acclaim for her passionate portrayal of Arjuna in Shakti's
magnum opus Bhagvad Gita. Ms. Charugandla has won equal praise for
her range of character portrayals in Shakti dance ballets such as
the Nutcracker, Moha Mudgara, and most recently, the portrayal of
Duryodhana in Bhagvad Gita. Ms. Moorthy just performed a solo
recital for Yuva Bharati in the San Fransico Bay area and flies in
from Switzerland where she is on assignment with Amgen.
"If classical Bharata Natyam is to grow in America as an art form,
organizers, donors who support the art and audiences must come
together to encourage and foster young talent who have shown the
commitment to stick with the art," says Ms. Prakash, Artistic
Director of Shakti Dance Company. Ms. Prakash has organized this
festival and many others in an overall effort to encourage young
dancers in America. These endeavors have given the local community
numerous opportunities to interact with and be exposed to the best
of Indian performers.
Although Bharata Natyam has gained vast popularity in America, for
the most part solo performances are few and far between. Visiting
artists are usually encouraged by organizers to present group
choreography and opulent dance productions to entertain their
rasikas. An appreciative audience for a solo Bharata Natyam
performance is very limited and even when the events occur, they
adhere to one of the following formats: 1) a visiting artist from
India accompanied by live or recorded music 2) an arangetram
extravaganza of one of the local dance students in the community 3)
or a fundraiser by a post-arangetram performer, seeking a platform
to continue his/her solo dance growth.
Nritya Naivedhayam presents a refreshing and different picture.
While showcasing the great masters from India, it also grants an
equal opportunity to the young emerging artist who has seriously
pursued dance for several years. "This unique interactive
performance platform is vital for the development of the performer,
connoisseur, and student of Bharata Natyam in the American
diaspora," believes pioneer dancer, teacher, and choreographer Viji
Prakash.
Over the past three decades, Ms. Prakash has presented innovative
performances in Southern California, essentially popularizing
Bharata Natyam in the region. Commencing with the sellout
performance "Dance of the Immortals" at the Dorothy Chandler
Pavilion, Ms. Prakash paved the way for taking Bharata Natyam into
bigger and state of the art auditoriums. She has also brought
artists and art forms from various communities together, most
recently Basant Utsav (2006 B-Fest), Aum Sho Namah (Sacred festival
2006) and the dance ballets: Purandara Dasa, Meera, Shyama,
Bhagvadgita, Prince to Buddha to name a few. Each of these programs
involved guest performers and granted committed young artists
opportunities to pursue this art form.
Ms. Prakash has also arranged performances, master workshop and
camps of internationally recognized Indian Bharatha Natyam soloists,
such as C.V. Chandrashekhar, the Dhananjayans, Indrani Rehman,
Alarmel Valli, Guru Kalyanasundaram and his son Harikrishna
Kalyanasundaram, Srilata Vinod, Ajit Bhaskaran Das, Sudha
Chandrasekhar, Father Francis Barbosa, Kiran and Sandhya
Subramaniam, all to provide role models to emerging classical
artists in America. A firm believer that viewing 'good' dance, and
interacting with leading professionals is a vital aspect of learning
the art form, "Viji Aunty," as she is affectionately known, expects
her students to attend these programs in order to improve their own
dancing.
All festival programs will occur at James Armstrong Theater,
Torrance and will begin promptly at 4:00 p.m. The tickets are $35
and $25 students with ID $15. For tickets, contact the Theater Box
Office at (310) 781-7171. For information, contact Viji Prakash at
(310) 837-5875.

*featuring Habib Koité and Dobet Gnahoré only

Every so often, an event reminds us why we are so moved by song: its
beautiful melody, rhythm and message. While Putumayo has presented a variety of
world music concerts and CDs, African music has been the heart and soul of its
offerings. This fall, Putumayo brings together three of the African continent's
most gifted singer-songwriters for an international tour.

The *Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Africa* Concert Tour featuring *Habib
Koité<http://www.putumayo.com/acousticafrica/habib.html>
* from Mali, *Vusi Mhlasela<http://www.putumayo.com/acousticafrica/vusi.html>
* from South Africa and *Dobet
Gnahoré<http://www.putumayo.com/acousticafrica/dobet.html>
* from Ivory Coast will travel to more than 40 cities in North America and
Europe, giving audiences a rare opportunity to experience the dynamic
performances of these extraordinary musicians.

Highlighted on Putumayo's *September 5th* CD release *Acoustic
Africa<http://www.putumayo.com/catalog/item.php?item_number=254-2>
*, alongside Angelique Kidjo, Lokua Kanza and other respected African
artists, these distinctive and influential singer-songwriters write and
perform contemporary music inspired by their cultural roots. Each has made
an effort to remain grounded in their region's musical traditions while
being open to external musical influences. In the 1980s and 90s, while most
African superstars built careers on studio-based synthesized dance music,
Koité, Mahlasela and others spearheaded a return to a more acoustic
tradition with meaningful songs, rather than beats, as the basis of their
music.

The Acoustic Africa Tour and CD will also provide an opportunity to draw
attention to some of Africa's challenging social issues, in addition to its
music. All three performers on this tour are social activists, building
awareness of the conditions in Africa that affect the region and the world.
The 1980s and early 90s in Africa were punctuated by enormous political and
social transitions. The direct result was profound on Koité's and
Mahlasela's creative output, and reflected a maturation in their artistic
identity.
Often addressing issues of social and political significance in his
homeland, Mahlasela's lyrical message of peace was a beacon of change during
South Africa's formation of a new government. Eventually, this drew him
into close contact with national leadership, performing for Nelson Mandela's
inauguration in 1994. Meanwhile, Koité had formed his new band Bamada in
Mali, where tribal conflicts had reached a peak prior to the first
democratic, multiparty elections in 1992. Koité's extraordinary talent in
bringing together divergent musical styles is evident in his songs, which
reflect the multiple ethnic traditions of his country and nurture the goal
of a pan-Malian culture.

At the same time, a young Gnahoré was studying music and dance in the
pan-African community of Ki-Yi in the Ivory Coast, where social conflict has
led to the displacement of thousands in the last decade. Eventually, she
too migrated to France, where her artistic identity continues to evolve.
Gnahoré's songs, musically and lyrically diverse, evoke the struggle and
hope of her country.

This will be Gnahoré's debut tour of North America. Koité and Mahlasela
have each toured successfully but never as part of such a diverse
presentation of contemporary African music. Join Putumayo for an evening
with Habib Koité, Vusi Mahlasela and Dobet Gnahoré, three of Africa's
premier singer-songwriters in a truly unique concert experience as the
*Putumayo
Presents: Acoustic Africa* tour comes to a venue near you.

*A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of the companion album
Acoustic Africa will be donated to Mercy Corps
<http://www.mercycorps.org/>in support of their efforts to help AIDS
victims and victims of the civil
war in Darfur, and to Oxfam America's <http://www.oxfam.org/> and Oxfam
Novib's <http://www.oxfamnovib.nl/> "Make Trade Fair" campaign to improve
trade conditions for African countries.*

Hello Everyone,

I'm sort of new to this group. I usually don't post, but had to about
this new service called eNubia. I don't know what it is, but if you go
to www.enubia.com it says it's a free service for the African community.

I says it's giving away an Ipod and free plane tickets to Africa or
something. Here are my thoughts about what it could be; a free African
ISP service, or African music download service.

24. November Weekend Mexico Drum Retreat: Shamanic Spa
Posted by: "Ron Knight" [EMAIL PROTECTED] knightmedi
Date: Fri Sep 29, 2006 2:57 pm (PDT)

Hi all;

I hope this post finds you well and happy as we move into the final
quarter of the year 2006, a time of harvest, reflection,
consolidation, wrap-ups... and new beginnings. The beginning of the
end... and then a new year. Did you see that last Harvest Moon? I
was up at the base of Mt. Shasta, reading about the bell people and
the Lemurians; and when did we last see a radiant orange face like
that beaming from the horizon as it raised across the evolving night
sky? Rare when it happens... blood moon rare...

Some of you have asked for the update on this year's November Mexico
Drum Retreat, and here it is: Based on what people respond to, as we
are asking for your preference as to which weekend you would
prefer to join us for this wonderful weekend retreat offering.

November forces many of us to take family time breaks for
Thanksgiving. So we're asking you to tell us which looks
better to you and we'll advise the firmed up dates. As the holiday
season falls upon us, so many of have so little time, and yet that
alone perhaps is the best reason to participate in this great
opportunity for Drum, Massage and Introspective Review of What you
are Doing, as passages to be considered at the Shamanic Spa. A time
to enjoy not only the appreciation of time and space between the
elements that we can see by particpating in rhythm, but also to
enjoy this wonderful place that offers our visitors a space
to take in and fill themselves with the energy of the elements that
surround us, breaking the intense rate of daily life, and take the
time to stop and contemplate our deepest, interiorized self(ves) for
some pretty deep directional decisions.

This rhythm and therapies retreat offered at the Pre-Hispanic
Cultures spa in El Nogalito, is a convenient hop from the airport in
Puerto Vallarta, and is just a short taxi ride from Ron's condo in
the South Bay of Puerto Vallarta.

In either case, you are free to schedule additional time to enjoy
the beauty, galleries and shops of Puerto Vallarta, and we can help
you with accomodations if needed.
