1. [9.30.06] Create:Fixate All Photography Show Featuring Cary Sullivan
Posted by: "Cary Sullivan" [EMAIL PROTECTED] afrofunke
Date: Fri Sep 29, 2006 2:58 pm (PDT)

CARY SULLIVAN
@
CREATE:FIXATE ANNUAL "ALL PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW"

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2006

Arts organization Create:Fixate will present its annual “All Photography
Show” on Saturday, September 30, 2006. The one-night only art exhibit will
feature 26 diverse photographers including Cary Sullivan.

Cary Sullivan is a multi-talented photographer, producer and talent
consultant whose career has traversed the culture, music and art landscape.
With experiences that range from organizing festivals in Africa to producing
progressive radio in Los Angeles, Sullivan currently produces Afro Funke’, a
weekly nightclub/happening at Zanzibar in Santa Monica, CA. Sullivan’s
arresting photographs have defined Afro Funke's visual essence through the
cutting-edge series of promotional flyers she has created. She will bring
her "fly on the wall" approach to her Create:Fixate exhibition, offering
images ranging from traditional rituals to the modern urban existence in
Ghana, West Africa where she has traveled extensively for over a decade.
When speaking of her photography, Sullivan believes she is a student of life
who loves to share her experiences with others. She is also grateful for the
humility that comes from spending a long time in such a truly amazing place
like Africa.

The evening’s music will match the visual array of remarkable stimulation
head-on. A mixture of DJ entertainment as well as live performance, a few
of the highlights from the 13 aural artists include John Kelley, Henry
Strange and Sam Sparro. For the past decade, Los Angeles native, John Kelly
has been considered one of North America¹s foremost breaks DJs - a true
pioneer of the West Coast sound. Henry Strange, a veteran electronic music
producer and film composer, performs mid-tempo, funky, swingin’ beats live
with a Theremin, and loves to mangle and process a bizarre array of sounds.
And native Aussie, Sam Sparro’s funk infused music is the sum of his church
choir upbringing and his appetite for nightclubs and back-alley warehouse
dance parties. Currently featuring a semblance of laptop, guitar, keys and a
couple of backing singers, his show is somewhat of a throwback to the funk
greats of the 80's.

Create:Fixate is dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging and mid-career
artists in a unique environment. Usually, every two months, Create:Fixate
founder Michelle Berc curates, produces and hosts these stunning group art
shows that present creative people from around the globe with an emphasis on
the local talent of Los Angeles. Awe-inspiring painters, photographers,
sculptors, and multi-media artists exhibit alongside an equally impressive
array of Los Angeles' finest DJs and musicians. Each event's audio artists
are poised to create a soundtrack for the night that transforms this from a
simple 'art show' into the city's most anticipated Art Event.

3. November Weekend Mexico Drum Retreat URL

Hi All;

Thanks for your swift replies...

Okay; the web pages for the Mexico Weekend Retreat are now up on the
web, in addition to the registration form as a PDF file.

The group responses derived that November 16th was the better
weekend, and that will also allow you to make the most of a
Thanksgiving holiday, should you wish to stay longer in the Puerto
Vallarta area through Thanskgiving holiday weekend. Our event
scheduled the weekend before seems to be the favored choice, so
please enroll ASAP! We have total openings for just 27 folks.

This retreat will "rub you right way" guaranteed; as you delve
deeper into Drum'n Trance, with a whole lot of shaman goin' on.

Thanks! Hope to welcome you along...

Greetings!

The L. A. Orff Chapter reminds you that our first 2006-2007 workshop
will be this Saturday! If you have already mailed in your membership, all you
have to do is sign in at the door. If you haven't joined yet, you may register
at the door, either as a member or as a single day attendee.

A workshop flier is attached which gives all of the details.
However, here's a short description and James' bio.

We hope to see you at James' workshop - it's going to be GREAT and
lots of FUN!

James Harding: The Art of Play
September 30, 2006
9am-3pm

Hermosa Valley School
Hermosa Beach

In an Orff-Schulwerk classroom, children make discoveries through
play with the elements of music: rhythm, tempo, dynamic, timbre, pitch and
form. In this workshop we will try to name and experience some of the important
kinds of play within Orff-Schulwerk teaching, including imitation, question and
answer, improvisation, composition, re-composition, variation, substitution,
and collage. We will talk about how to look out for the rich possibilities of
play "along the way" to teaching set compositions or traditional materials and
how to keep that spirit of play alive in childrens' performances.

James' bio:
James Harding has been teaching music to children for 15 years. He
trained in classical clarinet at Yale University and the Mozarteum in Salzburg,
and received his Orff-Schulwerk certification from UC Santa Cruz in 1992. James
has taught on the faculties of the Orff-Schulwerk Levels trainings at Mills
College, Cal State Los Angeles and the University of Oregon, and has taught
workshops in Spain, Australia, Thailand and at the Orff-Institute in Salzburg.
He is a founding member of Xephyr, an Orff-Schulwerk inspired performing group,
plays Balinese music with Gamelan Sekar Jaya, and recently
completed his first film score for a feature-length documentary.
James is a past-president of the Northern California Chapter of the American
Orff-Schulwerk Association.

She has a lovely space with great sound and we've always had
a great time singing, sipping tea, and hanging out.

This year, Cameroonian producer/multi-instrumentalist Andre Manga will
