4. Lian Ensemble: Classical Persian Sufi Music, great percussion sectio

Date: Sat Oct 7, 2006 2:26 pm (PDT)

This concert celebrates the mystic voice of love and longing for
union with the divine through music. In Sufi terminology "love"
and "heart" can note something higher than "love" and "heart" of
conventional usage. Since the true beauty of the Sufi meaning of
these words can only be hinted at, poetry is one of the best mediums
for presenting a clarification of such expressions. In this concert
Persian mystical poets such as Rumi, Attar, and Nurbakhsh, shed
light on a better understanding of "love" and "heart" from the Sufi
point of view.

WORLD CITY RETURNS FOR A FOURTH SEASON

MUSIC CENTER'S WORLD CITY RETURNS FOR A FOURTH SEASON
WITH PERFORMANCES THAT CELEBRATE L.A.'S DIVERSITY THROUGH THE ARTS

International artists join local artists in this free, global series that
offers an exploration into a variety of cultural traditions including
Pan-Caribbean, Chinese, Maori, Inuit, Irish and Chicano

 (September 27, 2006) - The Music Center's World City is a performance
series featuring internationally renowned artists sharing their culture
through dance, music, song and storytelling. The events take place on
select Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and are free to the public.
Tickets are distributed starting at 10 a.m. on the day of the event and art
workshops are offered immediately following each performance.

Presented at the W.M. Keck Foundation Children's Amphitheatre at Walt
Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Avenue, Downtown Los Angeles, World City
kicked off on September 16 with the poignant puppet theatre play "The Pink
Dress" presented by Triumvirate Pi Theatre and the powerful rhythms of taiko
music by On Ensemble. The series continues on October 28 with Australian
storyteller and musician Paul Taylor and the Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre.
Additional performers include David Gonzalez/¡Retumba!, Melody of
China/Hsiao Hsi Yuan Puppet Theater, Nukariik/Vinok Worldance, Máire
Clerkin, Gangbé Brass Band, Quetzal/Danza Floricanto USA and Halau 'O
Keikiali'i. Dates and specific information follows.

Many of the performers at World City are from an acclaimed roster of artists
who also participate in the Music Center's school programs. Each month a
particular culture is featured through the performances of one or more
companies. The post-event art workshops offer attendees a chance to
participate in the creative process with simple, hands-on art activities
focused on the cultural theme of that day.

"World City is a unique opportunity to experience the diverse cultures of
Los Angeles with some of the world's most acclaimed artists, from both the
international and local community," states Barbara Leonard, Artistic
Director for Education at the Music Center. "We welcome the entire
community to come join us in exploring and learning about the different
cultures that make up the amazing mosaic that is Los Angeles."

Support for World City provided by grants from the Weingart Foundation, the
Julie Stearns Dockweiler Foundation, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission,
The Kenneth T. & Eileen Norris Foundation, and the Peter and Merle Mullin
Endowment Fund.

BOOK
"O medo é a extrema ignorância em momento muito
agudo."
Fear is extreme ignorance in an intense moment.
João Guimarães Rosa, Brazilian writer, 1908-1967

I've been carrying an old book for many years called
"First Sories" by Brazilian writer from Minas Gerais,
João Guimarães Rosa. The book was released in 1962,
but he became well known in 1956 with the novel
"Grande Sertão: Veredas (The Devil to Pay in the
Backlands). "It is thought to be a riddle about
popular superstitions. Most of the book's spirit is
however lost in translation, as the portuguese
original is written in a register that is both archaic
and colloquial, using almost a grammar of its own,
making it one of the most difficult books to translate
(because quite a few translators will not even be able
to read it). It is considered one of the most
important novels of South American literature".
In 1963, he was chosen by unanimous vote to enter the
Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of
Literature) in his second candidacy.
By coincidence, the quote I'm presenting you in this
newsletter (see at the end) was written by poet Olavo
Bilac, who was a founding member of the Brazilian
Academy of Literature.

"HOW DOES A MOUSE BRAIN CORRELATE TO THE HUMAN BRAIN?
Humans share more than 90 percent of their genes with
mice, making the mouse a good model system for
learning more about disorders and diseases rooted in
the human brain. " Check the Brain Map:
 http://www.alleninstitute.org/

The flutist Rebecca Kleinmann will be at La ve Lee on
Tuesday, October 10th at 8:30 and 10:30 pm with Josh
Nelson, on piano, Randy Tico on bass, Ami Molinelli on
percussion, and Lorca Hart on drums.

FOR YOU:
" 'You say you hear the stars!
Right! You lost your senses'!
And I will tell you that to hear them,
I wake up many times, open the windows palid with
amazement…
(…)
And you say: 'Crazy friend!
You talk with them? Which sense do they make when they
are with you'?
And I'll tell you: "Love them to understand them!
Only the ones who love, have ears capable of hearing'.

(By Olavo Bilac, who also wrote, in my opinion, the
most beautiful Brazilian anthem: The Flag Anthem. I
used to sing it with all my heart at school. Years
back I was surprised when Ivan Lins played and sang it
at the Hollywood Bowl.)

FOR YOU again:
"While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing".

(From "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" by Bob
Dylan/1965)

8. Grand Re-Opening for Eso Won Books Oct. 14

Date: Sat Oct 7, 2006 2:30 pm (PDT)

Eso Won Books

Press Release
Grand Re-Opening for Eso Won Books Oct. 14
Nationally Renowned Champion of Black Authors Relocates
to Leimert Park with All Day Party on the Block

Los Angeles , CA , September 28, 2006: In a world of Ipods and 100 inch plasma
screens, Eso Won Books boosts its commitment to its reading patrons and authors
by relocating to legendary Leimert Park in southwest Los Angeles . The Grand
Re--Opening will be held Oct. 14, designed to be an all day "party on the
block" from 10 a.m. til 7 p.m., with special festivities held at 2 PM.

"The community invited us in when the space became available and the
building owners made us an offer we couldn't refuse," quipped James Fugate,
co-owner of the noted first stop to famous authors touring the Southland. While
he closes out the old store on La Brea near of Coliseum, Fugate's partner, Tom
Hamilton, is leading the move and remodeling effort in Leimert, in the midst of
shops including Zamebezi Bazaar, Sika's African Jewelry and Gallery Plus.

Over the years, Eso Won has built its reputation by being the premier
destination for authors who travel to Los Angeles., including President Bill
Clinton, Muhammad Ali, the late Atty. Johnnie Cochran, Patti LaBelle, Tina
McElroy Ansa and Terry McMillan. And patrons love it.

"We are making this move to prove that the reader of quality books is still a
viable consumer," said Fugate. "It's our effort to get closer to the book
buying public that has supported us over the years. " The space Eso Won will
occupy was formerly the Museum in Black, which has moved to the Dunbar Hotel.
Hamilton is decorating the new facility to have a warmer, inviting feel, while
better accommodating special events for hundreds or offering quiet reading time
at chic patio tables for individual customers. * *
* *
*The Grand Re-Opening Activities (Open to the Public) are outlined as
follows on Oct. 14: *
* *
*11 AM: *Eso Won will open with rotating list of authors signing books,
including noted authors *Karen E. Hudson *and *Kwaku Person-Lynn* who will sign
their latest works while performance artists lend their talents. Food will be
catered by *Arts and Foods*.

*Noon: *An exciting children's story hour featuring Ellaraino, noted
storyteller.

*2 p.m.:* Officials from the City of Los Angeles and other dignitaries will be
on hand for the Ribbon Cutting.

Eso Won Bookstore was founded 18 years ago after Fugate learned the business
from running the campus bookstore at Compton College , the only black college
west of the Mississippi . "Tom and I originally came together to sell books we
were really interested in," said Fugate, of the days they sold books out of
their cars. Eso Won was first established in 1989 on Slauson Ave. near
Crenshaw Blvd., then moved to 900 N. La Brea Avenue in Inglewood. In 1996, the
store expanded to a larger facility also on La Brea at Coliseum.

"It is the first time we have been around an African American business
community like our own," Fugate said. "We stopped selling greeting cards at
Christmas two years ago and we referred customers to Zambezi . Now all
customers have to do is walk across the street to get them."

The day after the Grand Re-Opening, store hours will begin at the regular hours
from10 a.m to 7 p.m. (Sundays, noon til 5 p.m.) at 4331 Degnan Blvd. Los
Angeles . The new phone number is (323) 290-1048. It will be business as
usual, with Fugate and Hamilton posted at the counter, answering the daily
question: "what should I read?" That is, until the next big author thunders
through the hub of black readers, writers and reference that is Eso Won.

*--Eso Won--

12. WRKSHOP: Balinese dance, mask making and shadow puppetry
Posted by: "dellarteinternational" [EMAIL PROTECTED] african.beat
Date: Sat Oct 7, 2006 2:36 pm (PDT)

(The Bali trip) was the most precious and most visceral and most
illuminating experience of my life and everyday, it becomes more so."
Liz Garrott, MFA, U. Penn Explore the traditional arts of Bali with
Dell'Arte Abroad program Intensive offers chance to study Balinese dance,
mask making and shadow
puppetry

Since 1996, Dell'Arte International has invited students, teachers,
designers, directors, and artists to immerse themselves in the
traditional arts of Bali and encounter the profound spirit of the
Balinese people. In this unique and wonderfully successful program
participants study traditional Balinese performing arts and crafts with
village masters, as well as Dell'Arte mask and movement techniques led
by Dell'Arte's Founding Artistic Director Joan Schirle.

Bali is an extraordinary country where creativity is ordinary. In Bali,
art serves the community, the religious practices, the economy and
everyday living. The trip introduces students to Balinese performing
arts in a way that allows them to experience how the Balinese live and
create, and how family life and religious customs are woven into the
creation of art.

The program begins with three days of orientation to the language,
customs, and ceremonies of Bali, as well as informal meetings with
Balinese teachers to observe their work. Introductory work will include
a symposium on masks with local carver I. B. Anom, visits to the studios
of several mask carvers and puppet makers, and attendance at a shadow
play (wayang kulit) and dance performances.

During the next four weeks of formal study, classes meet five days a
week. All students will study kecak, a rhythmic vocal chant, as well as
participate in regular Yoga/Alexander Technique sessions, block
printing, and symposiums on the links between Balinese and western mask
performance traditions.
Sometimes our study will take place in a classroom setting, sometimes
outdoors, and often in its traditional setting at village and temple
ceremonies. The core of the program is designed so that each student
spends a large percentage of their class time on one area of interest
most important to them. Students will choose between:
            • Mask Carving
            • Balinese Dance (masked topeng and legong)
            • Shadow puppetry (wayang kulit)

Academics may apply for a shortened version of the program (10 to 14
days). Address inquiries to the Bali program director.

For more information, visit www.dellarte.com <http://www.dellarte.com/>
