1. Master Drummer Amadou Kienou - from Burkina Faso -

Press Review:
Considering that Burkina Faso musician Amadou Kienou hails from a family whose
lineage includes several noted practitioners of the craft of the griot, its not
surprising that his own music is much more than a mere percussive orgy.
Kienous musical training took place through the rituals and ceremonies that
still mark the life of his native village (baptisms, weddings, funerals, sacred
rites etc), an apprenticeship which has served him well in his rise to the
professional arena, working with such luminaries of African music as Manu
Dibango, Youssou NDour and Baba Maal. A virtuoso of the djembé, a drum of
ancient provenance carved from a tree trunk left to mature for at least a year,
Amadou (who is also no mean vocalist, intoning chants of rare intensity) wrests
from his instrument polyrhythms of dizzying complexity, drawing the listener
into a whirl of hypnotic, chattering beats.
Burkina Faso is a country with cultural diversity sewn into its DNA. As a
territory that is home to sixty different ethnic groups it can be forgiven and
perhaps even congratulated for not producing a coherent national musical style.
Its this complex interlock of cultural grids that forms such an essential part
of Amadous performances.
Without forgetting the folkloric heritage of his hometown, natural curiosity
cannot help but lead him elsewhere, ears forever on the alert for the new and
unpredictable to add to his repertoire. Which is why the tracks of Sya resound
with echoes of Wolof or Mossi territory (the Mossi are the ethnic group that
accounts for around half the countrys population, and whose culture is a
hothouse for would-be griots) adapted to the temperament of the djembé.
Listening to Amadou Kienous playing is sure to prove an unforgettable
experience not only for percussion heads and others already addicted to African
music but also for the floating listener in search of the balm of natural,
limpid sounds.

3. Help with a project on African Music
Posted by: "Joe Sensor" [EMAIL PROTECTED] jsensor
Date: Tue Oct 31, 2006 11:52 am (PST)
I am in a graduate class on African Music and I am doing my final
project on integrating African Music into elementary music
curriculum.
If anyone out there is currently an elementary music teacher or
otherwise is involved in teaching elementary age kids, I would like
to ask you the following questions (even if you don't teach but you
feel you have pertinent information, feel free to respond):
1. Do you use African music in your curriculum? If so in what
format (songs, games, instruments, etc.)?
2. If you do not, why not? (ie. too much preparation time, no
materials, etc.)
3. Do you think there is a need for more African music in the
elementary curriculum?
4. If so, then how can teachers be encouraged to integrate more
african music into their programs?
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
I know you are all busy, but I am trying to get some objective
answers as to the use of African music in schools. Feel free to
answer my rather vague questions as fully as you like. Even yes/
know would be fine. Please email any responses to me at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
this is the easiest way for me to get your responses. I may quote
your responses for use in my paper, so I assume that by replying you
are giving me consent to use your comments. I will not use any
specific names unless you give me express consent.
Thank you again!

Rocky Dawuni, is one of West Africa's most popular musicians.
He is currently blazing new paths with his genre-bending CD "Book of
Changes,"
a progressive fusion of Reggae, Afro Beat, traditional African sounds, and
Hip Hop neo-griotism.
KCRW Music Director and host of "Morning Becomes Eclectic," Nic Harcourt,
states "Rocky's mix of Reggae and Afro beat is infectious."
Dawuni's live performances have often been called legendary and his
popularity spans the globe.
Rocky was invited to be the musical personality for the 2005 Reebok
Humanitarian Awards where he
was joined in song by Peter Gabriel and he also shared the mic with none
other than
Stevie Wonder at a sold-out concert appearance at his Los Angeles club, Afro
Funke'.
Rocky continues to raise his international profile with a recent distinctive
appearance on
Showtime's smash hit series "Weeds" performing "Jammin Nation" in episode 2
of the Emmy winning show's 2nd season. Also featured in the same episode is
Dawuni's "Jah Be For Us."
No stranger to TV, two tracks from "Book of Changes" set the tone as NBC's
"ER" traveled to Africa
and the show also highlighted Rocky's rendition of "Knockin on Heaven's
Door" to massive response.
Rocky was recently invited to be the musical guest for a private event for
Jeffrey Sachs,
renown poverty expert and head of the UN Millennium Project.
The event was hosted by Quincy Jones and Roger Waters.

Through its simple, sweet reflections of love, its headline-torn news
reports,
its tales of spiritual awakening and calls for unity, there is a thread
running through the songs
on Joseph Israel's debut disc, Gone are the Days. Combined, they quite
simply point to a
better way to live, to a better world. Available online on September 26,
2006 and in-stores
January 30, 2007 by New Door Records/UME, the 15-track disc also finds
Israel,
who has toured nationally with Luciano and Abijah, backed by a litany of top
reggae musicians,
including saxophonist Dean Fraser, lead guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith and
bassist Chris Meredith,
who co-produced Gone Are the Days with Israel.

6. Tribaljazz (with John Densmore) out today!
Posted by: "Erik Koral" [EMAIL PROTECTED] erikkoral1976
Date: Tue Oct 31, 2006 11:57 am (PST)
http://www.tribaljazzlive.com
http://www.myspace.com/tribaljazzdensmore
John Densmore has been telling people he's a jazz drummer since his
days with the Doors; he finally gets to put his sticks where his mouth
has been with Tribaljazz. The Los Angeles-based collective releases
its debut album date October 17 on Hidden Beach Recordings.
As their name implies, Tribaljazz combines Densmore's love of the
classic Jazz of Miles Davis and John Coltrane with the global rhythms
he's explored since his first recordings with the Doors (their hit
"Break On Through" was inspired by the Bossa Nova beat of "The Girl
>From Ipanema") through the Middle Eastern grooves heard on last year's
"Ray Of The Wine," his collaboration with Master Persian musician Reza
Derakshani.
Tribaljazz grew out of a benefit Densmore played for his children's
school where he shared the stage with saxophonist and fellow parent
Art Ellis. "I liked Art's melodies," Densmore explains, and the two
began to rehearse and work on songs that combined jazz sounds with
African percussion. They soon invited musicians that embody the
diverse nature of Los Angeles and allow Tribaljazz to draw from a wide
palate of sounds and rhythms: pianist Quinn Johnson, Cuban born
bassist Carlos Del Puerto, Italian-born, Brazil-trained percussionist
Cristina Berio and African master drummers Marcel Adjibi and Azziz
Faye.
When the new group went into the studio they were joined by guests who
reflect Tribaljazz's far ranging music: actress Alfre Woodard adds a
hypnotic spoken interlude to the spacey jazz of "The First Time," and
Spearhead's Michael Franti brings his distinct grooviness to the
percolating "Violet Love." For their cover of the Doors' classic
"Riders on the Storm," Densmore brought in a copy of a whispered Jim
Morrison vocal that was placed deep in the mix of the version of the
song included on the "L.A. Woman" album. Heard on it's own here for
the first time, it adds an eerie undercurrent to Tribaljazz's dreamy
arrangement.
For Densmore, the music of "Tribaljazz," is hard to categorize, but
easy to enjoy: "It's not tribal-ethnic and it's not pure jazz; it's a
synthesis of the two. That's what I'm interested in. You can make
people dance, but improvise on top of it."

15. Ashley Maher - Live! New DVD
Posted by: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Tue Oct 31, 2006 12:14 pm (PST)
Dear Friends,
I hope you are all well! I am super excited to announce the arrival of my very
first official DVD: "Ashley Maher - Live!"
As many of you know, this past summer, I opened for two of my all time heroes:
first, Senegal's BAABA MAAL in June, then Malian superstar SALIF KEITA on the
Santa Monica Pier (in August) with a full international band, plus two fiery
dancers.
It was a magic night. Salif was gracious in person and, as always, amazing
onstage. Meanwhile, my own band played beautifully, the dancers and drummers
were blazing, and the huge audience gave us a standing ovation!!!
The DVD is gorgeous and very professional. To buy a copy (it's so fresh, it's
not even on my website yet!), you need to have a PayPal account. Having a
PayPal account is easy to set up, costs nothing, and gives you a very secure
way to transfer money. (Full instructions below.)
If you don't have a PayPal account, don't wish to set one up, but DO want to
buy the DVD, email me and we can work out the details of posting me a check.
Thank you all so much for your support
Big Love, Peace, and Blessings!
Ashley
