CéU, the brightest new star of Brazilian MPB, performs in Santa
Monica at the Temple Bar to celebrate US release of her debut album,
co-released by Six Degrees Records and Starbucks Entertainment. CéU
is the first international artist in the Starbucks Hear Music Debut
series and was recently nominated for a Latin GRAMMY in 2006 for
Best New Artist.
Well rooted in Brazilian musical history, CéU and her five-piece band
will be performing a mix of samba, electronica, reggae and
jazz.Billboard magazine says, CéUtraverses the rich musical terrain
of her country while updating it with hip-hop and electronic
touches, and Newsweek International boasts how, CéU segues easily
from pop to reggae to dub in velvet,jazz-accented vocals.
CéU, whose full name is Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças was born into a
musical family in the artistically diverse city of São Paulo; her
father, a locally renowned composer, arranger and musicologist,
taught her at a young age to appreciate the music of Brazil's great
classical composers.
Her diverse musical up bringing combined with her experiences living
in New York City and the surroundings of São Paulo has resulted in
an album that is surprisingly mature and fully realized for a debut
effort from such a young musician.On every track you find yourself
being pleasantly surprised by her delicate and elegant balance of
inventive experimentation and reverence for tradition.

*****DANCE DOWNTOWN! returns with Cumbia/Merengue featuring live
music by the celebrated, La Internacional Sonora Show.
Dance Downtown is a free dance series on selected Friday nights with
each event focusing on a different style or form. Dancers of all
levels are encouraged to attend. The evening features live music or
DJ and complimentary beginners' dance lessons.
WHERE: Music Center Plaza, 135 North Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA
WHEN: April 27th, 6:30PM to 10:00PM (Beginner lesson at 6:30PM)

Bringing cultures, ideas and genres together, director Ong Keng Sen is one of
the world's most provocative contemporary voices in theater. His productions
and initiatives have made theater a transcultural, transdisciplinary
collaborative art. Keng Sen is known for questioning authenticity and his
embracing of multiple realities and hybridity within Asia. His work is
characterized by bold reinvention of classical methods and interweaving of
theatrical traditions. His rich body of intercultural work ranges from the
large scale production of LEAR and GEISHA to more intimate and personal stories
based on the Milosevic trials and mass killings in Cambodia. Adventurous &
farsighted, Keng Sen is artistic director of TheatreWorks and the Flying Circus
Project in Singapore.
