Don Osborn Bisharat.net Culture Minister Calls for Respect Toward National Languages Angola Press Agency (Luanda) September 4, 2004 Posted to the web September 7, 2004 Luanda The Angolan Minister of Culture, Boaventura Cardoso, said on Friday in Luanda, that the respect for the use of national languages should take into account the country's linguistic diversity, thus avoiding any kind of bias. Mr Cardoso made this statement at the closing act of the second meeting on National Languages, opened on Thursday with aim to divulge and promote the vernacular languages in Angola. According to the Cabinet Minister, every and any Angolan citizen should valorise the national language, for being one of the most important vehicles of recognition of the Angolan culture. Boaventura Cardoso added that his ministry is aware of the "pressure", in good sense, that has been made by the society for the insertion of the national languages in the programmes of Mass Media's organisations The Angolan Culture Minister stressed that in order for this to happen it is necessary to bear in mind the recommendations from the first symposium about the national culture, held in October, 1984. The first symposium on national culture had recommended the elaboration of a base lexicon of national languages/Portuguese language and vice-versa, as well as the first technical grammars. The event witnessed the first presentation of communication in national languages and translated into Portuguese, an exercise to be practised by the professionals of the Angolan National Radio's Ngola Yetu Programme. The first meeting on languages spoken in Angola was held in 1991, under the promotion of the Institute of National Languages. The event was attended by the representatives of the country's 18 provinces. --- ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Make a clean sweep of pop-up ads. Yahoo!
