African languages should be used to promote unity and development and
not the vice versa, a renowned Kenyan scholar has said.

"There is no language that is superior to another one but the systems
of subjugations and domination attached to them are the ones which
send wrong signals," said renowned author Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o.

Professor Ngugi also called on Africans to be proud of their
languages and use them in institutions.

The writer, who recently suffered a one-hour robbery and grossly
humiliating experience after his return to Kenya from a 22-year self-
exile to the United States, said that those who attacked him were
sending a false message about the security situation in Kenya. He has
since been accorded state security.

"The Kenya represented by the incident is not the real Kenya. Those
doubting it can come and see the beauty for themselves," Professor
Ngugi told a packed hall at The Kenyatta International Conference
Center Plenary Hall in Nairobi on Thursday, August 19, 2004.

The Professor was addressing more than 2000 scholars who had gathered
to listen to a lecture on language, knowledge and empowerment.
