The Kamusi Project Internet Living Swahili Dictionary
(http://www.yale.edu/swahili) today publicly announces the launch of a complete
re-design of the site, with many new features now available and many more
coming soon.
We have been working on the new site design for quite some time. Users will now
find the site more informative, easier to use, and (we think) a pleasure to
look at. We invite you to explore the site and to participate in the project.
You can help edit dictionary entries, upload photos that illustrate particular
terms, and participate in ongoing conversations on the Swahili Discussion
Forum.
We have recently implemented a feature on the Participants page that credits you
for your editorial submissions and photo contributions that we incorporate into
the project - in this way, those who contribute get recognized immediately for
the work they've put in. The Kamusi Project dictionaries are still incomplete
and have some mistakes, so if you find an error or omission in the lexicon,
please use our Edit Engine to make things right, and you will be acknowledged
online as soon as your submission has been reviewed.
The Kamusi Project is a collaborative effort to produce and distribute new
Swahili language learning materials. Project materials are available to the
public online for free, including a comprehensive Swahili-English and
English-Swahili dictionary. We are currently developing an online Swahili
curriculum that we look forward to making available in mid-2005, and we are
also working on more improvements to the dictionary that we will announce as
soon as they are completed. The project, which began in 1995 as one of the
first African language projects on the Internet, now serves tens of thousands
of pages a day to visitors from around the world.
For Kamusi's new look, we owe thanks to the volunteer efforts of web designer
Greg Huntoon, a generous contribution from an anonymous donor, and the computer
programming of Paa Kwesi Imbeah and Andrew Smith.
You are welcome to visit the site, use the dictionaries, and contribute to the
project's ongoing development.
