KW=Council+of+Europe&lmLangue=1 : [28/06/04] Secretary General calls for Afro-European alliance to protect languages ''Each language that disappears on this globe is a loss to cultural heritage,'' said Secretary General Walter Schwimmer in a meeting with Adam Sammassekou, president of the newly-formed African Academy of Languages. Mr Sammassekou, who comes from Mali, called for a dynamic partnership beween Africans and Europeans to encourage language learning. He told Mr Schwimmer of plans for a year of African Languages in 2006, to mirror the 2001 European Year of Languages piloted by the Council of Europe. It's also mentioned in a more recent document from the ICANN conference in Cape Town not long ago.
