Call for Proposals

ICWT Translation Grants 2006-2007

The International Center for Writing and Translation (ICWT) announces
that four grants of $5,000 each will be given to translators to
support translations of literature (fiction, poetry, creative
nonfiction, and drama) or theory into English. "Theory" refers here to
literary theory, translation theory, political theory, or philosophy.
The ICWT is particularly interested in translations from cultures and
languages that have been marginalized and overlooked by the
Anglo-American canon.

The ICWT seeks to encourage the use of English to "enable rather than
disable." These translations will help to raise awareness of and
interest in the works themselves, their authors, and the languages and
the cultures from which they come. It is also the hope that the
translations in English will encourage the translation of the texts
into other languages. In keeping with the Center's mission, these
translation-grants will be "a means of giving visibility to genius
from even the most marginalized."

These grants are intended to support the progress and completion of a
major translation-project in preparation for publication. Please note
that proposals to translate one's own work are ineligible.

Recipients will be required to visit the University of California,
Irvine, and to conduct a translation workshop for graduate students
and/or give a series of talks that examine how the translator
approaches a project, and the experiences and challenges s/he
encounters in the translation process. The ICWT will provide travel
funds for the visit.

Application Requirements
• Project proposal (not to exceed three pages) that includes:
1) an analysis of how the source text fits into both the literature
and culture it comes from and how its translation into English will be
important for the source culture and help the target culture
understand better the literature, the language, and the culture of the
author.
2) an outline of the translation strategy and/or approach that would
be utilized for the specific source text.
• Statement about the rights of the work(s) to be translated
• Writing sample of proposed project: include original and translation
(10 pages maximum)
• Curriculum Vitae with record of published translation
• Three letters of reference
