While some would have us believe that the best way to IPv6 adoption in Africa
is to speed up the exhaustion of our meagre IPv4 resources, those that have
surplus are making sure to reserve some for the future as they sell.

"We hold a block of 16 million IPv4 addresses. Fourteen million of these IPv4
addresses have not been used, and we have concluded that at least eight million
are excess and can be sold without impacting our current or future needs, up to
the point when IPv6 becomes universal and address scarcity is no longer an
issue.”

Mind you, these 16 million addresses held by MIT is the entire /8 we have left
in Africa.

A market will exist as long as some have resources that are valuable to others.
We will have the African community at the wrong end doing the buying if we
don’t have enough IPv4 to deploy the IPv6.

Precisely what we have been saying on the RPD list with Soft Landing-bis which
is seeking to ensure that all African organisations can get enough IPv4 from
AFRINIC to roll out IPv6 when they need to, no matter their size or current
state of readiness.

The proposal is at
https://afrinic.net/en/community/policy-development/policy-proposals/2075-ipv4-soft-landing-bis
 <>

Please read it and support it on the RPD list or let us know how to improve.
Whichever you choose to do, do soon.
