I think part of the problem is terminology. The "singularity" terminology
is totally daft. Also, "intelligence explosion" was originally defined
in the
wrong way - so as to exclude the phenomena that it ought to reasonably
refer to. Orwell argued that language shapes thought. In this particular
case, bad terminology has been messing up a lot of people's thoughts.
