In mathematics a singularity is when a value goes to infinity. The technological singularity is when knowledge, computing power, and intelligence all go to infinity. This cannot happen because of physics. The observable universe has finite computing and storage capacity.
Some people use singularity to mean the point when AI exceeds human intelligence, which should lead to rapid self improvement. Again this is wrong because you cannot compare human and machine intelligence. Either it happened in the 1950s (because we associate math skills and memory with intelligence) or it can never happen (because the best a machine can do in a Turing test is tie).
