Keep in mind that before the electronic communications era people sought forms of communication and forms of super/omni-intelligence and developed these concepts for many reasons and these were/are not perfect by far since transmissions were without sufficient lossless mechanisms. I could argue that electronic communications is making individuals less intelligent in some ways, is short circuiting many high level processes but won't bother. Over-classification is another issue, with too much labeling/symbolizing and that can paralyze efficient cognitive thought where one must obey what they were taught to regurgitate with fear of misapplying a label... like a Skitts Law on scientific terminology.
