Indeed, one has to shift one's analysis from Hamilton's inequality of altruistic behavior to the hive as extended phenotype of the reproductive caste centered on the queen. The queen parasitically castrates her own offspring to become parts of her extended body. I don't think dolphins are as reproductively specialized as are humans, let alone ants. Humans are getting pretty "good" at parasitic castration wars now -- so it may not be long before a catastrophic eusocial subspecies appears and wipes out everything else. The conditions for incipient eusocial evolution don't appear to exist in any species where a "protected nest" of some sort is absent. Dolphins have nothing of th esort. The protected nest is a necessary precursor to reproductive specialization. See "The Evolution of Eusociality" by Nowak et al and "The Social Conquest of Earth" by E. O. Wilson. ------------------------------------------ Artificial General Intelligence List: AGI Permalink: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/Te5067e2e110c2303-M16e9e8a3d867405456e0509a Delivery options: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/subscription
