The history of computer science is the history of artifical intelligence efforts. Many things like SQL databases and stuff came from early AI efforts that turned out to be useful products but not appreciably intelligent. Prolog came from attempts to solve machine reasoning.
The claim that a project will serve as a building block for AGI implies the existance of an ediface into which the block can be inserted, and that the block will adequately contribute to that ediface once incerted. To me, the requirement for generality blows away pretty much the entire field like a deathstar blast. Literally anythning you propose as a building block gets vaporized by the question "why is this not something a general learning algorithm could learn to do?" Take the basic faculties of a human, perception, reasoning, memory, etc... and reduce them to their atomic form and then allow them to develop/mature/expand organicly in a fractal like nature to create your AGI mind. You only need the seed, not the plant! I mean seeds can get really tiny, have you seen tomato plant seeds? =P Your senses and modalities need their own device drivers but that's literally all, Once you have the design principle you are done, the fractal will complete itself. So I'm reading my daily Wheatley and I'm getting a confounding mix of things I look for and red flags. =\ Actually my head-draft for that e-mail the other day intended to call him a FRUSTRATING person, not an annoying person, not that this correction means much. What I'm saying is that I'm forced into this mode where I can't fully evaluate his proposal and he hasn't yet matured his writing skills to the point where he can defend it adequately. =| What I want to see is how he is going to build a brdidge between what he has with compression and language prediction, to prediction in general aross all modalities (= consciousness) and how he's going to contribute to all the other qualities and faculties that we require from an intelligent mind... -- The vaccine is a LIE.
