Such testimonies are in many ways like reports of UFOs. Someone experiences a phenomenon but they don't know how to describe the operations required to reproduce the experience in others, if they know the operations at all. What they _do_ know is others have reported similar experiences and have developed an argot associated with such descriptions.
"Rationality?" It's like this: Science is about phenomena anyone can reproduce. Magic is about phenomena only some people can reproduce. Religion is about phenomena nobody can reproduce. Rational reaction to the latter is in the eye of the beholder.
