But does he have the expertise to pull it off as an individual? I would say it is possible. Most AGI work so far has been pursued by academics who have never been forced to learn software engineering best practices required to deliver under market pressures. The evolutionary pressure just wasn't ever there. This shouldn't be a surprise. You usually don't hear about the academic projects being taken to the stage of completion and distribution. Think about it this way: If projects get bloated and hard to understand, with ramp-up time measured in years, how can you really be optimized for experimentation? This is not to discredit the importance of the research. I think it often takes a cooperation of both research and economic pressure in order to get to the finish line. I would suspect Carmack understands this, and also understands what resources to consult, and how to spot the bullshit artists in the field. I'd work for him in a heartbeat. Even though AGI isn't where my technical background is, I think that kind of knowledge wouldn't be a good fit for decentralized delegation to the implementing engineer, and the work should be driven by a specification. Thoughts on any of the above? - M N ------------------------------------------ Artificial General Intelligence List: AGI Permalink: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/T5bbfadf63743faf7-Mca4c74173c2af1e5d4d027bf Delivery options: https://agi.topicbox.com/groups/agi/subscription
