As an aside, I don't think that trading is a zero-sum game, and researchers
working in this field contribute nothing to society.
1) They do serve a role in stabilizing the markets (in certain situations
they can create more instabilities but that is relatively rare) and create
liquidity for these markets.
2) Ideas and concepts developed in the field of trading can be used in
other fields of research. It is one of the most challenging fields where to
apply AI for example because most AIs give trivial answers when applied to
financial data (basically variations on the price today is equal to the
price tomorrow), dealing with the high noise environment of trading is
something that AI cannot deal with at the moment. So it is a very good test
bed to explore new ideas and given the markets are very unforgiving if your
model works in these conditions probably is going to work in an environment
with much less noise.
