Actually there are 3 ways I came up with 1 GB of text.

1. I assume 150 words per minute for normal speech and similar for reading
for several hours per day for 20 years. A word is 4.5 letters and a space.

2. I use Landauer's estimate of 10^9 bit capacity for human long term
memory based on memory tests. This applies to language, images, and music.
1 GB of text compresses to 1 bit per character using the best methods,
consistent with Shannon's estimate of 0.6 to 1.3 based on human prediction
tests.

3. Turing estimated in 1950 that a computer with 10^9 bits of memory would
pass the Turing test in 50 years.
