Hi all, We're trying an experiment in online discussion... an open video-chat for moderated discussion on H+ related topics. The discussion topic for this first experiment is "The Global Brain."
Specifics are: *** March 20 (Sunday), 2011: H+ Salon. 2PM US Eastern time. Topic: The Emerging Global Brain. Moderator: Ben Goertzel. *** [Sorry for those in the Orient, there's just no way to find a day/time that works for everybody.... If this turns out to be a successful idea we'll try a variety of day/time combinations...] For details see http://humanityplus.org/h-seminars-and-salons-online/ or read the guide below (pasted from that page for those too lazy to click) I'm curious how this will work out -- maybe nobody will show up, maybe we'll be overwhelmed with eager participants, maybe somewhere inbetween.... Come see for yourself ;) Thanks Ben Goertzel Chair, Humanity+ P.S. ************** SEMINAR AND SALON GUIDE *************** What Are H+ Seminars & Salons? ------------------------------------- Seminars: Speakers with expertise in key areas of transhumanism-related science, technology, art, philosophy, etc. Sessions will generally consist of one-hour lectures followed by 30 minutes of questions and discussion. To make full use of the interactive medium, the lecture portion will normally pause at roughly the 1/3 and 2/3 points for brief questions and discussion. The Elluminate interface allows free text-chat discussion among participants to occur in parallel with the lecture. Salon sessions: 60-90 minute moderated discussions on specific transhumanist topics. Typically the moderator will give a 5-10 minute introduction to the topic at and, followed by moderated video-chat discussion, in parallel with unmoderated text-chat discussion. (For historical background on the “salon” concept ask Wikipedia.) Using Elluminate ------------------------ Elluminate is “virtual classroom” software, used in a large number of universities for their e-learning efforts, as well as by some companies and nonprofits. To quote the feature list: “Its communication tools include integrated Voice over IP and teleconferencing, public and private chat, quizzing and polling, emoticons, and a webcam tool. The software includes several visual tools, including whiteboard, application sharing, file transfer, and web tour. The software also includes a record feature that allows the moderator to record the class for others to watch later as well as a graphing tool, breakout rooms for group work, and timer. The whiteboard supports the uploading of presentations for viewing on the whiteboard for class or meeting.” To use Elluminate to log into a H+ Seminar or Salon session, simply click on the following URL https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?sid=&password=M.78001D0C4E01704DBF298E4D5747A0 or paste it into your Web browser. If you haven’t used Elluminate before, you may want to do this 5-15 minutes or so before the session starts, just to be sure no browser issues arise. (Note that you can’t log into the Elluminate classroom at any random time, only during or slightly before or after the seminars, because the session moderator has to be logged in to Elluminate, in order for the room to be available.) To get a sense of what an Elluminate-based seminar looks like (beyond that provided by the screenshot at the top of this page), go to the syllabus for the Elluminate-based course on Singularity Studies that Ted and Ben Goertzel taught at Rutgers University in Summer 2010 (a 3-credit accredited undergrad college course, BTW). If you scroll down to the part of the syllabus that describes individual guest speakers, you will find links to recordings of the relevant Elluminate sessions. -- Ben Goertzel, PhD CEO, Novamente LLC and Biomind LLC CTO, Genescient Corp Chairman, Humanity+ Adjunct Professor of Cognitive Science, Xiamen University, China Advisor, Singularity University and Singularity Institute [email protected] "My humanity is a constant self-overcoming" -- Friedrich Nietzsche ------------------------------------------- AGI Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/303/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/303/8660244-d750797a Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=8660244&id_secret=8660244-6e7fb59c Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
