I apologize if this is an off topic post, but I wanted to warn people out there that there is a fraudulent person going by the name of "Mike Rose" that is exploiting the ideas of fellow transhumanists and singularitarians for his profit, and wasting their time. I've spoken to many people in private about this and the responses I have received gave me indication that I have enough evidence to go forward and warn the community about this individual. It is an insult to the intelligence of our community the actions he is carrying out against us and the deception he is using, which I will detail below.
I was contacted by Mike Rose, via Alex Lightman's friends list, to join a group of people to form the Intuitive IQ Facebook group. Mike's guidelines for the group is that people should post solutions to problems, with a plan for implementing them. Or people can present a problem and ask others to solve it. I was very active and helpful toward building conversations, inviting over 20 of my own personal friends to join the group. Mike and I had many conversations over the last 6 weeks. I became suspicious after a friend of mine who is retired CEO took a look at some of Mike's posts and said that they were suspicious of somebody who would be using them for profit. Here is a very partial list of the things which raised my suspicion meter (I can provide logs if needed): 1) I posted a piece of writing on some ideas I had for practical uses of AI. After doing so, He started talking to me daily, sometimes spending more than two, three, or even four hours in chat with me on Skype and/or Facebook, steering the subject of the conversation toward my ideas. He didn't specifically ask me to tell him, but he would use psychological tactics to try to get me to do so, which most ordinary people would be naive to. At the end of a long conversation, he would end by saying that my ideas are "safe with him", or that I should "know who my real friends are, like him". 2) Mike said that he had been having similar ideas, and that we should "join forces" and share our ideas. I'll quote him: "up front I will say that what you are talking about with creating this "Intelligence Google" is strangely similar (different, but similar) to what I had planned for the IIQ website and I really think we should share our visions more and see if this is something we may want to combine" 3) I started hearing complaints in private from people that I had invited to the group. Mostly about censorship, which Mike is free to do, as it is his group. But I noticed that he would generally disapprove of completely valid solutions to problems that he asked, but the solutions involving patented products that are for sale but not particularly popular yet. Also, anyone who questioned him about any of these things were deleted from the group, despite the fact that he 4) Not long at all after I told him I wanted to keep the rest of my ideas private, he messaged me and told me that he had written a paper on "how to create a conscious AI". He changed the subject shortly after that. Then after talking for several hours, getting my mood elevated, setting the atmosphere, etc. He said he would share his paper with me if I signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement. One business tactic (a nasty one) is to get someone to sign one of these agreements and then give them in return your "ideas" which are exactly the same as the other person's ideas who was going to compete with you. But now they can't use those ideas because it would be against the NDA. You might not have a case in court, but they will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars defending it. Mike Rose knows almost nothing about AI, and certainly not enough to warrant an NDA. Someone of his business caliber should know better. I'll quote him: "maybe i'll show that to you sometime not without an nda though it's too cool and possibly original though i know nothing of ai research" 5) One person I know did some digging and found out that Mike Rose is an alias for Michael D. Rosenthal. I've had some experiences with scam artists when I was younger and more gullible, and they often use aliases such as this. There is also evidence of this if you go to http://www.intuitiveiq.com and "View Source" and search for "Rosenthal", which links to a "michaelrosenthal" folder. 6) Another person pointed out to me that his Intuitive IQ philosophy, which he is selling here http://www.intuitiveiq.com/intuitiveiq.htm, is pretty much extremely similar to the ideas from another speaker, Edie Raether. http://www.keynoteresource.com/article5EdieRaether.html 7) Mike also runs an Executive Consulting business described at intuitiveiq.com, which essentially means that he gets paid to give other people ideas. Now this is fine and all, and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Mike and I have been having honest, nice chats for about 6 weeks, and I have given him more than a good share of good ideas for him to use however he wishes to. As we were talking recently, we had been sharing links related to similar websites that had been having the goal of creating a better version of the "global brain" or better crowdsourcing methodology for the world. He responded with this: ------*BEGIN CHAT*------ Mike Rose Mark, please keep sending the links because I'm very interested who is doing what right now, but please also keep in mind that none of these people are competitors, not even in the realm of being competitors with me, and not with you either, as long as you do what I mentioned and focus on what only you can do. I am doing with my life what no one else can do, fulfilling my unique purpose, which no one else can fulfill. I'm not just saying this about myself, my group and my website are based on the same concept, that each person has unique intelligence to offer that no one else can. Thus, I can assure you that I have no competition in life, and I personally am not competitive with anyone else. I'm simply delivering IIQ to the world. How I do that is unique to iiq, just as my group is unique, or do you want to start sending me links to groups "just like mine"? If you can find one I will smile. Have a good nice my friend, and remember, when we focus on our unique talents and what we can only offer the world, we always succeed and we are always fulfilled. ------*END CHAT*------ Since he had logged off, I thought I would make a post to his group, answering his question, and following the group philosophy by engaging in honest discussion about a serious issue, which was the issue of ethical morality by crowdsourcing and the solutions we can come up with to find a fair and balanced way to do so ethically while allowing the efficient flow of ideas and in a way as to not to hinder the ecosystem of ideas in society... This is so that we can all learn from each other and take the best out of every system. This is called Aardvark, reached at www.vark.com. It is just a question answering system where humans answer questions based on several "subject matter" pieces of information that they choose in their profile which will match users to questions based on the subject keywords that are in the profile, combined with search technology. Despite them having four Ph.Ds and a staff of 20 people, I didn't get the feeling that their technology could provide the people to answer questions in a way that gave me much useful information. 2) http://www.ledface.com/ This is a startup called ledface.com - This is basically a human search engine that is anonymous. But I have some reservations about this system working as it seems to have a few screws loose in this "global brain" they are talking about, like sustainability and efficiency. 3) And this one will make you smile Mike, as it is not only similar to your group but I think it is "just like yours" -- http://www.keynoteresource.com/article5EdieRaether.html While it may not be a group, it underscores the fact that many of us may be pursuing the same goals and may have...*different approaches* to leveraging the other minds out there to pursue a common goal. To Intuitive IQ members, how would you solve the problem of working together for a common goal in the capitalist world that we have today? How do you find the balance between trade secrets and crowdsourcing? What is the best method to use the other minds that are out there to help us with our goals, but still be able to profit from it? What if we could take the unheard voices of millions of Americans, that do not have graduate degrees from Ivy League schools, or those who are not CEOs of companies, or politicians, and give them a modest amount of money in exchange for letting the big wigs turn these ideas into global actions? Is this a good idea, or is it immoral? Certainly if an idea is good, and put to use, it is for the better good? Right? Right? This is a very important topic and should be discussed. As it applies to every single one of you who is reading this, and every single person who shares ideas in todays world. There is a big industry in the trading of ideas, and social collaboration. They have a term for it, "Crowdsourcing". What is the best way to crowdsource and give people a fair share for their efforts? Do the CEOs deserve more even if it is not their idea? The only thing that would cause him to delete the message would be that he does not want his plagiarism exposed. The rest of the message was well within his goals for the group. Prior to this I had been one of the most active members and understood VERY well what he did and did not delete, and what he did and didn't like. Whether he deleted it or not would give me a good idea of what was really going on here. Not only did he delete the message, but started this conversation with me at 1:00 AM. Keep in mind that prior to this he stated that "we connect on a deep level" and "you are a good friend" was stated multiple times. He is stealing intellectual property from the Singularitarian circle, which is contradictory to the beliefs of Singularitarianism, Transhumanism, Humanity+, or whatever you wish to call it. I want to iterate that this is *not* about a personal feud I have with this guy, since I suspected he was fake from the beginning but didn't have enough evidence until now to say anything. Please take heed of these warnings and avoid Mike Rose at all cost. I take great risk posting all of this in public, because if people do not pay attention, not only will he get away with this, but others like him will learn from these mistakes on how to do a better job of conning people.
