I see this as the point where AGI has finally touched the marketplace, bringing with it all the incentive for improvement that contact entails. Of course, the argument that Siri or Now is true AGI is extremely flimsy, but the difference is more of degree than kind. These dumb agents will evolve into true AGI through incremental enhancements that raise their intelligence, simply because market pressure will motivate those incemental enhancements. What we'll have in the end is artificial personal assistants that do exactly what we want, understanding us better than we understand ourselves, and have no risk of catastrophic failure of the apocalyptic sort being bandied about so much online lately. Any failure mode even remotely resembling that sort will have been identified long before the agent reaches sufficient power to "take over the world" (like a cheesy supervillain), simply because no agent with those sorts of issues would sell, and the iterative engineering process for designing the agents will have plenty of time & notice to correct the problems.

To one user, they experience an AI agent. But in reality it is just presented to them that way and it's really the same AI agent software massively internetworked. What Siri and Now can/will do in the near future is mind-blowing. Most people have not even thought of the possibilities here once these agents get integrated into daily use, if they do. Personally I shut Siri off since it erroneously out-dials my contacts so I don't trust it. Also, when you own one of these devices say goodbye to any privacy or anonymity... it's not difficult to fire up the mic or camera across the internet from an app. And our government uses this for investigations (according to WikiLeaks). It'll be a while before either will reply to email and have it indistinguishable from oneself. Voice technology exists though for it to assume your voice but that is not currently implemented. Google Now is part of the reason Google Maps was jettisoned from IOS 6 I believe as the competition between IOS and Android intensifies.
