Re viruses, they may be one of the mechanisms of gene transfer
between species, driving macroevolution, so they can have had a critical
function in the ongoing development of life. As a technology they could 
become a tool of choice ...

I wonder if we're venturing too far with the biological computation though.
A physician I met once said that a virus is simply rogue DNA. If we start
computing with DNA I wonder what literal viruses would be created.
