My main machine died a sudden death (an obscure power issue I am still
working on) so I am making do with an old laptop and 512MB
temporarily. The only Windows that I could get running is windows
2000. I downloaded workable older versions of my favorite programs
from oldapps.com

Why do I bring this up? I was impressed by how little improvement
there has been in all this time. Most of the programs I downloaded
(the older versions) do everything I need and are simpler to use, not
having suffered runaway bloat. W2K is not supported of course, so I
keep an eye on the firewall. I don't have any faith in microsoft's
security anyway so nothing is lost. ... But, it is a very
straightforward seeming operating system compared to newer Windows
versions.
