And the "take-off", as you call it, has to do with what Douglas
Hofstadter called
"strange loops."

It has to do with having a system that is able to recognize enough patterns in
its own functionality and its own interaction with the world, to be
able to recognize
useful patterns regarding which actions will improve its own pattern
recognition capability
significantly...

This recursive, reflective pattern-recognition capability is what
drives *development*,
i.e. the fundamental self-improvement of a system coupled with an environment

Take-off to superintelligence is merely a particularly interesting
example of the
phenomenon of cognitive development
