With the Dev program a Nao's only $4,200.
Also, if you search enough, you'll find organizations giving away their robots
to researchers.
If your preference is working on hardware, then I can see why you'd prefer to
build it yourself. I myself prefer the software aspects; hardware is a
necessary evil, on which I try not to spend too much time.
