Sure the idea isn’t new. But the *system*/reality when it comes – shared by billions - will be. And I assume the basic resources for such a system are already there or almost there.

Long before the internet and the PC, you used to have a keyboard and a screen connected to a time-sharing mainframe computer by a RS-232 cable. All you have at home is your screen & keyboard, everything else is Cloud. It’s interesting to speculate how this – which, when you think about it, has to come – will change our ideas and culture of computing and thinking. The mobile internet – not that anyone in AGI has yet realised it – destroys the idea of disengaged / disembodied/ disembodied thinking – thinking disconnected from the real world. The kind of Chinese room / Plato’s cave thinking which characterises logicomathematical thought. The cloud computer will, I guess, focus our attention on how crucial the user is to the whole process of computational thinking. At present, AI-ers think that programs function all by themselves without users – and without the massive creative input of users’ brains. Just the magical, all controlling, all powerful algorithmic program. Except that it patently isn’t. The cloud computer will probably make us realise just how massive and essential the human mind’s contribution is. But all speculations on other effects welcome.
