You need to know how to program, and you need to know a fair bit about data
structures and algorithms (upper level undergrad courses in those
subjects). Beyond that, either CS or CogSci provides a useful background,
depending on where you want to focus...

That's a pretty broad question...

For OpenCog right now, most team members are programming much of the
day.... But there are also other roles that can be useful, like project
management, design of AI algorithms and processes, etc.

Not very, even in AGI projects with a strong neuroscience foundation.
Neuroscience education is largely focused on doing lab experiments,
whereas AGI is largely focused on building and playing with software....

However, if you want to pursue brain based approaches to AGI, a background
in computational neuroscience and neuroscience generally could be useful IF
coupled with knowledge of programming, algorithms and data structures....

Ability to maintain a positive attitude and self-motivation while doing
very difficult work that most of the world thinks is crazy, that pays
mediocrely at best, and that provides few exciting incremental results...

Experimental lab work and AGI software development are both valuable, and
each offers its own form of tedium. Pick your poison!
