There was a Lotus product called Magellan that used a tree control to allow you
to create different typed entities and relationships between them.

Those entities could be OLAP objects documents, spreadsheets, diagrams etc...

It really cried for a more visual interface though.

People could see how powerful it was but Lotus never did a good job of
demonstrating how it could do complex data management chores.

If they had done that a published a programmatic API it may have taken off like
Lotus Notes.

It was limited to search and what you could do with macros if I remember right.

Another early product that gave flexible adhoc data storage was called AskSam.

It's still being sold but seems to be pretty outrageously priced in my opinion
for what it does.

I often wished that Microsoft would have developed Visio more putting SQL
Server database tools behind it to allow it to be used as graphical database.

For enterprise hardware/network architecture reporting and data capture of
serial numbers and configuration parameters such as system would be very
powerful.

With an good programmatic API such a system could also be tied into a
monitoring system and allow for enterprise hardware/software monitoring.

Of course it would also add a lot of new functionality to the kind of mind
mapping and adhoc knowledge data capture of which you speak.

One product that seems to have some promise is The Brain 8.0

It is so utterly different I hardly know where to begin.

A page is just a place to post and comment and stuff a few files. It cannot not
be used to create new classes and populate instances or to relate any items
(most of which pages cannot even define) in any way you chose (labeled graphs)
or even accept tags nor does it provide much of any query capability, certainly
not by tags, object properties, relationships to other things, time entered,
type of thing and so on in any combination desired.

A page is more like a [very limited] blog in many ways. Totally different
beast. Also remember version #1 is strictly personal, not a social network
thing at all. It is foremost a tool for extending your own mind. When it does
become more social thing a Page or Group that automatically shows you the
up-to-date opt-in parts of the participants extended mind that is relevant to
and allowed to be seen by that particular Group/Page/Mind View. :)

That does have the great merit of aiming for a category of products in which
many instances are known to be useful! Though, what domain would you aim for?

The one I am currently working on is Personal Knowledge Management. Think all
the URLs, files, photos, events,PIM-ish things and pretty much anything you
care to remember. Anything you want to wrap a type with properties around as
well. All tagged however you like and with arbitrary dynamic relationships
between them. Toss in location and time of entry automatic associations. Easy
to remember information, tag and associate it and easy to find information and
browse linkages you may not even have been aware existed. Basically and
extended associative memory fused with more or less object database abilities
available from mobile devices, computers and on the web with transparent
synchronization.

Phase #1 is strictily personal - your stuff only. Phase #2 will add more social
and group knowledge maps and being able to share sub-maps. Phase #3 adds opt-in
data mining and automated agents to seek new relevant information from the web
automatically and process gathered knowledge to date in various to be defined
ways. Part of phase #2 may include things like automatic group member
notifications or updates of online groups with relevant entries from any of the
members with strict user permission of what parts of their knowledge map can be
shared with whom.

Moving slow moonlighting the webapp version and building out the back end.
