Funny you ask - I'm just (re-)looking at this as well. I'd start with basic numbers (number 'theory' is too big a word) since they're fairly self-contained yet there's lots of 'unexpected' surprises when exploring them. Slowly move up the ladder going from integers all the way to irrationals introducing the basic math operators. However, this presumes that you have already introduced concepts such as sets and lists. Then I would move to number series (sequences) - do the stuff that Hofstadter did in his "Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies". Remember that this required him & his team more than 60 conceptual constructs generally reflecting human thought processes (in his CopyCat program). He suggested that this area alone was a good subset - and representative - of human thinking in general (and I tend to agree to a certain extent with him). After that, I think I'd (I'll?) go with some more number theory (primes) and more complex structures of numbers (Fibonacci, matrices) leading to basic algebra. After that I don't know but if you get that far, I think you've cut it. Anyway - I would do the numbers (and sequences) in parallel with strings (to texts) as well as simple programming (which could lead to function analysis). Cheers - Jean-Paul
