You are referring to "models" for which there is much theory. Nearly all
models are imperfect, but we need them to be able to handle new data that
is different than old data. Some would call this interpolation and
extrapolation, but models provide the richness to be able to anticipate the
radical nonlinearities of life without having to actually experience them,
e.g. "there is a cliff. If I step off of it I will fall and die. Therefore,
I shouldn't step off of it." Without a model, this level of thinking would
be impossible.
