Well, he's spent time here defending it. I was just thinking about the distinction: 1) Given the effect of the brain is thought, precisely replicate the CAUSE (brain), and you will by necessity get the same EFFECT (thought). Problem solved. (Hales) vs. 2) "Inspired by" something... psychology, physics, biology, metaphysics, mathematics, economics, linguistics, sociology, electronics, logic, hybrids, game theory, even accounting! (everybody else) We spend a lot of time arguing about which approach is best, but I guess I just want to keep this distinction in the back of my mind. There is kind of a pure "copy the brain" possibility that needs to be taken into account, even if you consider it unsound. I think there are grounds to argue that approach #1 is the only one guaranteed to work, if the laws of cause and effect hold up, meaning IF and ONLY IF an artificial substrate could be precisely identical to the real brain.
