And Turing started with an imaginary device using paper and pencil. I
wonder if he cut out paper rectangles for programs or rigged up actual
paper tape machines to use in a simulation of a machine. He must have at
some point although he seemed to be able to make a lot of fast progress
from 1936 when he started writing papers in Princeton until 1943 or 43
when, given enough money and good coworkers, he was able to get a computer
built that worked to solve variations in the enigma codes. He not only knew
of devices which used paper tapes (like textile machines) but he also used
the work of mathematicians like Hilbert (I think it is) who developed
theories about mathematical logic and theories about meta mathematics. In
1948 Turing built the first computer that could store programs built.
