I tried using a physics engine and virtual world but there is no substitute for the real world.
I wrote audio/ visual/ tactile etc input modules than can be run on separate physical processors/ machines. The main software is designed to be parallel and so can also be run on multiple machines. A 1GB backbone network for the sensory streams and inter column communications and a ram disk on the master machine for flagging/ coordinating the rest of the Beowulf cluster.
