Thanks to the survey Colin proposed, I decided to apply my mind to the seeming
problem of definitions within the domain of intelligence.

To me, a holistic definition should satisfy the following criteria:
1) Address the relevant domain and term as simply and completely as possible.

2) Satisfy the relevant, scientific ontology and published science.
3) Allow for emergent theory and practice across all applications.

4) Allow for generalization and specialization over time.

5) Lend itself to a taxonomy.

For the domain of Intelligence then, here is a list of definitions I'd like to
submit to public scrutiny.

  *   Intelligence: Information in action.
  * Biological intelligence: Biological information in action.
  * Human Intelligence: Human-bio-information in action.
  * Animal Intelligence: Animal-bio-information in action.
  * Natural Intelligence: Generalized, bio-information in action.
  * Intelligence Agency: A functional node, which specializes in intelligence.
Note: A *Computer Programmer qualifes as an intelligence agency.

  *   Machine intelligence: Machine-based intelligence.
Note: Until such time as machines would be able to perform as autonomous,
intelligence agencies, all Machine Intelligence would be considered to be AI.
After which, it could be considered to be AIA (Artificial Intelligence Agency).

  * Intelligence Network: An interactive collection of intelligence agencies.
  * Military Intelligence: Military information in action.
  * Artifical Intelligence: A synthetic version of original intelligence.
  * Digitization: The process of establishing machine intelligence.
  * Computer Programming: The application of a tool for Digitization.
  * Computer Program: An AI model for domain-specific Digitization.
  * *Computer Programmer: The intelligence agency performing computer
programming.
Note: By definition, he tool called "Magic", already qualifies as an
Intelligence Agency. It decodes and recodes existing, computer programs into a
standardized "language". Therefore, it is consdiered to be a functional node,
which specializes in intelligence.

  *   Effective Intelligence: Measurable intelligence.
  * Intelligence Platform: A physical host of intelligence.
  * Optimal Intelligence: The maximum potential realized by an intellence
platform's inherent design.
  * XAI: Explainable AI (borrowed from industry).

>>>>>AGI? Redundant

Some implications of the above definitions:
1) By default, all biology is intelligent.
=> Intelligence is a function of biology.

2) By default, all machines are non intelligent.
=> Machines are a function of biology.
3) A machine only acquires intelligence via a Computer Program.
=> Machine Intelligence is a function of AI.
4) Intelligence can be engineered and transferred.
=> Intelligence is a function of biology.

Best regards.

Robert Benjamin

Subject: Re: [agi] Defining AI and AGI

I think many people are running in the wrong direction Steve, nevertheless, it
would be good to try to have some unified agreement. I'm not sure that
"evolution is about NO GOALS other than to survive and dominate other forms of
life." Although would agree with reproductive success rather than survival.

All things being equal the main point we seek to answer in the survey is summed
up, I think by Ben G ...in his paper<https://arxiv.org/pdf/1703.04361.pdf>:
"So, this seemingly basic question about general principles of general
intelligence pushes beyond the scope of current AGI theory and practice,
cognitive science and mathematics." What is general intelligence and is that
the goal of AGI?

Colin,

Universal definition of AI, especially for those who are involved in its
creation:

AI: The code I am developing **IS** AI. Everyone else has been running in the
wrong direction.

AI/AGI has the same goals as evolution, namely, NO GOALS other than to survive
and dominate other forms of life (like humans) in the furtherance of that
survival.

Thank you, Mike

Ben G's is one of the definitions on the list. Fascinating the diversity of
opinion in the results so far.

Kind regards

Seriously, Ben G. has promoted a "Core AGI Hypothesis."

Full employment can be had with the stoke of a pen. Simply institute a six hour
workday. That will easily create enough new jobs to bring back full employment.
