I think Novamente's current mode of operation is pretty much semi-open
already (since so many have worked there) and is just a small step from
using my consortium idea -- if Ben is willing to give up complete control of
his AGI design....

YKY --
As you are writing about my own personal managent style, I suppose I should
be clear about something: I do not personally have (nor want to have)
complete control over the Novamente design. Novamente is a collaborative
project. I have the largest say but nowhere near 100% say. Major decisions
in the Novamente project are always made collaboratively; and there are
major areas of AGI work where I trust some of my colleagues' opinions over
my own.
However, when there is a disagreement and rational argumentation doesn't
lead to a definite conclusion (usually because the argumentation ends up
with a "difference of intuition" that can't be resolved except via extensive
experimental or engineering work), then as the project leader it falls to me
to break the logjam and make a decision. This happens quite rarely, nearly
always a consensus is found among key team members via rational discussion.
No one who joins Novamente can expect to have their intuition followed in
all cases. For one thing, the project has a bunch of code and a
well-articulated design already, so even if there are alternative approaches
that are just as good, we have already to a large extent committed ourselves
to a certain approach. For another thing intuitions are going to disagree
and when this happens, not everyone can get their way. However, anyone who
is accepted as a NM team member can expect to have their opinions listened
to and rationally discussed, even if not always followed after a decision is
made...
I think all of us on the NM team realize there are a lot of different ways
to do AGI, and a lot of different ways to do each part of an AGI ... and to
get anything done, at some point one has to stop debating and discussing and
just pick some particular path and do it.
