I AM PERHAPS NOT AS SCHOOLED IN THE MEANING OF “SEMANTICS” AS YOU, BUT I
THINK OF IT AS MEANING “MEANING”, AND I THINK MEANING COMES LARGELY FROM
ASSOCIATIONS, IN HUMANS LARGELY DERIVED FROM EXPERIENCE: OUR OWN DIRECT
EXPERIENCES; EXPERIENCES OF THINGS WE HAVE READ OR BEEN TOLD; AND
EXPERIENCE THAT HAS BEEN DISTILLED BY EVOLUTION FROM OUR ANIMAL ANCESTORS
(SUCH AS THE ASSOCIATIONS THAT MAKE SEX SEEM SO IMPORTANT TO MANY OF US).


YES, IT IS A VAGUE TERM.  BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WITHOUT USE.  IF,
AS YOU SUGGEST, THE DEEPER SENSES OF “SEMANTIC” ARE ALMOST SYNONYMOUS WITH
GROUNDING, WHY WOULD THAT MAKE THE TERM ANY LESS USEFUL THAN “GROUNDING.”



BUT TALKING ABOUT VAGUENESS, DOES “GROUNDING”, “MEANING”, AND “SEMANTICS”
EACH ONLY HAVE RELEVANCE TO THINGS THAT ARE REPRESENTED IN ONE OR MORE
MINDS, OR DO THINGS IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD HAVE MEANING BECAUSE OF THEIR
ASSOCIATIONS, PROPERTIES, AND CAUSES AND EFFECTS -- INDEPENDENT OF ANY
MIND’S KNOWING OF THEM.  DOES THE MEANING OF THE WORD “TRIGGER”, AS IN THE
TRIGGER OF A GUN, RELATE TO THE ACTUAL FACT THAT PULLING IT CAN CAUSE A
GUN TO FIRE AND PERHAPS INFLICT GREAT PAIN, DISABILITY, OR DEATH, OR ONLY
TO UNDERSTANDING OF SUCH FACTS BY A HUMAN OR, PERHAPS, WELL-EDUCATED
PRIMATE.

THIS IS A DEFINITIONAL ISSUE, BUT IS IT ONE THAT HAS BEEN DECIDED WITH ANY
CLARITY BY THE SCHOLARLY COMMUNITY?

I AM GLAD THAT, YOU LIKE JOSH, AGREE WITH ME ON THIS.  IT MEANS THAT
“GROUNDING” SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION OBTAINED BY THE
EXPERIENCES OF THE INTELLIGENCE THAT IS USING IT.

If I may interject:  a lot of confusion in this field occurs when the
term "semantics" is introduced in a way that implies that it has a clear
meaning [sic].  Some in the AI community do indeed talk about
"semantics" as if the definition is sharply defined, but the more you
probe it, the more problems surface, until eventually you can get to the
point where you are chasing your own tail.
