I read an article decades ago that said Japanese scientist assigned to
months of continuous duty at an international scientific base in
Antarctica were each issued a biologically correct, life-size blow up
doll. Presumably an AGI could be packed into something a little more
baba-licious than that, and a lot more 'Oh! Oh! Oh! Yes!. Yes!.
Yeeeeeesssss!" than that, and have a lot more better than Dr. Ruth
naugtily know how than that -- I'm talking real Red-Hot-Mama Robo-Babes.

Seriously, I think one of the real problems of AGIs is that they can
create virtual worlds and machanical friends that are so much more
interesting than us humans that we might lose interest in each other.
(One can argue that such a change, or at least something approaching it,
could help prepare human feelings for the transhumanist transformation.)
But if personal AGI's could be interactively controlled well enough by us,
we could interact with other people with and through them. Perhaps the
personalized sub-goals and sharable visual and auditory memories another
has given their personal AGI would become part of what was perceived as
their personality. Being with someone would be being with a
flesh-and-blood, wetware-and-hardware, whole that could be pretty damn
interesting.

I think creating high bandwidth interfaces that let humans rapidly
communicate with and control AGI’s is going to be one of the important
challenges of keeping human wetware in the loop for a reasonable length of
time during the transhu transit.

Heck with AGI Shrinks. More likely the nerds on this list will be marrying
robots by 2050:

Time will tell whether robo-spouses will be more maddening or less :-)

Doesn't everyone remember Dr. Smile from Phil Dick's novel "The Three
Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch"??

p.s. it was a robo-psychiatrist whose job was to make you crazy enough
that you could be exempted from being sent to a Mars colony, for reasons
of insanity ;-)

Personal AGIs could be very good psychologists for humans.

If the nano-electronics revolution delivers on its promise, in fifteen to
twenty-five years most of us should be able to afford and wear (or have
implanted) personal AGI's that can substrantially record all of our lives.
Once they have recorded audio, video, and emotional indicators of all or
substantial portions of our lives, they will be able to provide us very
real advice about what has made us happy, what has engendered bad
emotions, what we are doing right and wrong in our relations with others
and in our work. They will help us understand the origin of many of our
problems, help advise us about how to solve such problems and better
achieve our goals, and help remind us when we are straying from what we
have told it we really want to do.

What's more they can provide a valuable friend that cares about us -- one
that can remember every funny joke they have ever heard, and have the
sensitivity to know when each of them might be appropriate.
