Edward, It's certainly a trick question, since if you don't define semantics for this knowledge thing, it can turn out to be anything from simplest do-nothings to full-blown physically-infeasible superintelligences. So you assertion doesn't cut the viability of knowledge extraction for various purposes, and without that it's not clear what you actually mean.
