Hi guys, This question is aimed at folks who work on robotics or know a lot about it...
In a F2F chat with Josh Hall today, it occurred to me that it might be valuable to have an integration of Player/Stage/Gazebo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player_Project with OpenSim, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenSimulator The goal would be to be able to have AI system control virtual agents using detailed motor-control commands, similar to what one uses to control a physical robot ... yet also have the ability to interact with these agents in a content-rich virtual world.... I thought of poking the OpenSim folks to see if they think this would be an interesting direction, but figured I'd post here first just to see if anyone gives me a reason why it's a stupid idea.... (I think there may also be some OpenSim folks on these lists...) If feasible, this would be of plenty value to OpenCog, Novamente and other virtual-world AI systems. I love the richness of online virtual worlds, yet I'm sick of having to control virtual agents via crude methods like sending signals from the AI server to the virtual world that trigger specific, predefined animations.... There seems no logical reason why one can't have precise, robot-simulator type control of agents in virtual worlds... though I understand that realizing the software integration involved in integrating OpenSim and Player might involve numerous technical difficulties...
