It's not that episodic memory is stored in a different place (although
it probably is).  Episodic memory is the ability to recall events in
their proper order in a time sequence.  Recalling an event is itself an
event; we remember remembering things.  We can distinguish an event
from the memory of it, and from the memory of the memory of it.  This
"recursive" episodic memory (reading from memory also writes to it) is
what we call self-awareness.

Before you were 3 years old you did not have recursive episodic memory.
 Clearly you were learning, but you don't remember it.
