Hi all, I need some advice as to open or closed source for my AGI project. This is a very difficult choice as there are pros and cons on each side.
The main reason why opensource is bad is that we cannot protect innovative ideas from being copied by others. This may be a disincentive for someone with good ideas to contribute. My partial solution is to give virtual credits to contributors, but even this does not offer secure protection. I remember reading a book on innovation that says it is important to provide an environment where new ideas are protected. Sometimes greed is a good thing that drives innovation and progress. But opensource also has many attractions -- there is something very satisfying about users being able to examine the source code. Finding bugs, recruiting people are also easier. So the key question is whether there will be enough opensource contributors with innovative ideas and expertise in AGI...
