The usual explanation given for this is that understanding mathematics
may require thinking about spatial organisation/imagery/mental
rotation, which according to popular mythology are located in the
opposite hemisphere from speech understanding and production.  How
true or not this is I don't know.  Have any fMRI studies been done
specifically on learning of maths concepts?
