Yes, my intent on starting this thread was not to define consciousness, but rather to ask how do we make ethical choices with regard to AGI before we are able to define it? I agree with your points above. However, I am not entirely sanguine about animal experiments. I accept that they're sometimes OK, or at least the lesser of two evils, but I would prefer to avoid even that level of compromise when experimenting on AGIs.
