Not sure is the case, but looks like you just copied the egg into the plugins folder, have you tried installing it using easy_install <egg_name>? If you do not want to have it in the system python path, than you can set another dir of your choice, export it as PYTHONPATH and run the easy_install using the --install-dir=$PYTHONPATH option.
