It's only been meta in priorities since 2007 (Contracts).  You can see
a huge uptick in CFJs during the 2008-2012 years compared to previous.

Just as a note, some main proponents of "it's always been meta that 
way" (yourself, ais523, maybe scshunt?) all joined in that period.  I'm 
a big proponent of the 2002-2005 style of play (my salad years) that
were Not That Way.
