We're considering new engines. People have suggested DooM3 so far as it
is newer, but (a) it's not Open Source so there's no guarantee of
lasting support (which means the effort of making it accessible could be
wasted as soon as the next big thing comes out) and (b) it won't
adequately run on my PC. Quake3 was my next logical choice, but it is
getting on a bit (though, as with the Quake1 engine, is still
extensively used even in new games).

I have just posted my thoughts on the Unreal engine (basically it's
great but will most likely never be Open Source, even the older version
from the late 90s, that's still an awesome engine).

Maybe the answer is not to try playing catch-up to existing games, but
simply use an existing engine to make something different, next time.
I'm not sure. It will be a long way off from now as I want to get
AudioQuake into a state where people can really develop whatever they
want with it first, before leaving it entirely to the community to
develop. By that time, times will have changed.

The fact that I have no income does concern me in the sense that I can't
spend money on anything that's not research-related (and I couldn't
justify buying a new PC for gaming on that, heh). We'll have to see
what comes up, I guess.

I'm also interested in experimenting with map editing tools that you
could possibly use. That will be an exciting experience forall of us,
I'm sure!
