well sir i used to play a lot of games for the fully sighted and i'd use a
game pad and then use the keyboard to switch weapons etc. case of practice i
guess: but the pad i have at the moment has 16 programmable buttons as well
as 2 analogue sticks so i think if it was doable programmingwise it'd be
pretty easy to use.

Well, maybe, but I, for one, use way more keystrokes than could fit on a
game pad. Don't forget that, in the Jedi Mod, for example, you need:
turning
strafing
forward/backward
jumping
weapon selection
shoot
grappling hook on/off/mode change
misc tools: EM pulse, jet pack, force jump, force push, sabre dart,
teleport
grenade, det pack, etc
For a lot of those, you could use basic versions, but then you'd be dead
playing against me. For example, you can make a single key to cycle
through
all of your weapons, but I have keys that directly activate each of mine.
I
have keys that make 90 degree and 180 degree turns. I have combos that
force
jump and force push at the same time, so that I can face someone, throw
them
up against the wall, and jump straight into their face, ready to pull out
a
light sabre and hack them to pieces. There plane just aren't enough
keystrokes available on a game pad to do this sort of thing. And, with all
of my hotkeys, I can barely hold my own against sighted players with a
mouse. If you came into a game of sighted players with a game pad, they'd
slaughter you.
If you want to continue discussing methods, though, we should do that on
AQ
Flack.

Subject: [AGRIP-discuss] game pads
i know i mentioned something about this a few weeks ago, but i did some
thinking. if the people working on aq could make game controlers work with
the game, analogue sticks might not be a good thing for blind gamers, but
the standard d pad controls would be able to work in the same way as the
cursor keys: as in they would turn the set amount etc. but the bit that
would really rule if it could be done is that a lot of game controlers
have
force feedback, duel shock, what ever you want to call it. i don't know
how
difficult the programming for that would be but imagine as a blind gamer
if
you could feel when you fire, and you get a powerful vibration from the
pad
when you're being shot at etc. could be quite a handy as well as fun
feature.
