Be sure and check that the game window itself has focus. This may sound obvious, but it can happen and can exhibit the problem you're mentioning.

Hi,
It also requires the eflite package. I have tried it on 3 computers and
only one of them is playable. The other 2 do not have any game sound
for some reason. The Dell I use also has problems with eflite.
Hopefully when new progress is made, it can be switched to espeak
instead of eflite. This would make things better in a few ways
including the ability to adjust speech rate.

they've made all the source available to us to continue playing with
it, I'd hate to see it die, and have been struggling to get a reliable
computer to learn how to mod on.
I've not tried Ubuntu 9.4 yet, but after hearing that you've had
success with it, may actually go get it for that alone. Were there any
extra packages you had to get besides the libconfig-tiny-perl package?
Thanks much, and take care...
